Laser vision correction has enjoyed popularity and excellent results for the past 15 years. LASIK (Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is the most commonly performed refractive corneal procedure for correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. A million people in this country have reduced or ended their dependence on glasses or contact lenses with the help of LASIK.
LASIK involves the creation of a thin protective corneal flap. Dr. Joseph Weinstein uses a sophisticated and very precise Femtosecond laser to create the flap. With the flap reflected out of the way, the cool Excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea. The laser is computer guided and based on a very accurate measurement of the eye and can track the pupil, making the treatment extremely precise. The flap is then placed back in position and is allowed to heal. Most patients can resume their normal activities the following day.
PRK or Advanced Surface Treatment is also an excellent choice for laser vision correction. Patients who are not good LASIK candidates may be candidates for PRK. Results are also excellent, but the healing is slower. This procedure does not require a corneal flap and maybe a better choice for patients with thinner corneas.
You may be nearsighted, farsighted and have astigmatism. You must be at least 18 yrs of age, but preferably 21, have no eye diseases and a stable prescription for at least a year. LASIK and PRK are surgical procedures and as such, there are risks, but they are very uncommon.
